Damn you really like the word speakeasy
Considering our theme takes place during prohibition bars weren't around during the time due to the inability to legally sell alcohol.
Hence, they were sold in speakeasies which weren't publicly known.
(Don't ask me why our cop is visiting one and not doing anything about it. I'm guessing even the Host is dirty this game)

Damn I wasn't thinking about Prohibition when I started talking about it in my write-up.

Fucking plotholes.

I know that's what they were called, it just struck me how much you used the word, at least seeing it all line-to-line here. I don't know what else you'd call it, not trying to be negative, was just pointing out something I found kinda funny.

Thats actually a perfect use of hadoop for word count. We could use it to write a post counter, divide each page of the thread into its own process and count them up : )

Finals week is such a great idea, isn't it? Just cram loads of test and shit right into the last week of school. My math and physics classes literally have a test and then when they meet next week we have the final. That's bull.

Forgedigger:

Quote
I ran a hand through my hair, ventilating the sweat of the humid night mixed with the abundant cloud of smoke from the celebratory ciggy's. There was that bitter-sweet settling in my gut. We had finally caught one of them, the lady in the red dress. Sure we'd won the battle; but it didn't seem much like we'd won the war. It all happened too easily, something smelled fishy.

Bious had been my only lead. Was is just coincidence that she died before I could investigate further? It's possible that she'd become a liability. Could it be that they - whoever the hell 'they' were - sacrificed her to cover their trails? Just what kind of game were these guys playing? With the Sheba dead before I could dig further, my options were limited. The trail was running cold.

With a smirk of determination, I fixed my shoulders and stood tall. I'll be damned if that was something I'd let happen without a fight.

Detective Blindknagg's findings were the next logical place to look. Maybe he'd been on to something, a little too onto something. I pushed past the crowd and into Blindknagg's office. The smell of recently-burned papers permeated the room. Whoever had done this was smart.

A handwritten paper rested atop the desk. Now here was something. Why leave this and burn everything else? I scanned the paper for clues; it seemed to be a journal entry for one of his snoop targets. Blindknagg's barely readable and very unique handwriting recalled what had happened that night. Then something caught my eye. Scrawled at the bottom of the page:

After my extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that Pimp Willy is innocent.

Immediately my head went swimming with questions. Missing Person had mentioned Pimp Willy and having concrete evidence against him. Was is possible that he was just wrong? It certainly didn't seem like it after all of the trouble he went through to make sure the world knew. Something didn't seem right. I looked closely at the note, and finally found what I was looking for. The word 'innocent' looked... different. As though someone had changed the size of the pen used to write it. It hit me: forgery. It was subtle, but definite. There was no mistaking it. I grabbed the journal and scrammed inform the others.

After explaining the evidence, the crowd erupted the way mobs do. Cheers of "let's get 'im!" and "well what're we waitin' for?" echoed through the room. They moved as a mass and all circled the man known on the streets as Pimp Willy.

"The hell yous guys looking at?" Willy scowled around at the roiling crowd, fearless. His defensiveness only succeeded in rustling them up even more. Several big guys from the mob grabbed him and pinned him down as the rest prepared to lynch.

"Wait!" I cried out over the cheers. "We can use him!" All on deaf ears. I pulled myself away as they dragged him into the street to lynch him.

Alone, I stood befuddled in the strange silence inside. Again, another suspect was killed before interrogation. Someone had to be playing the crowd...

Pimp Willy was lynched.

We circle back around to @Missing Person.

The night phase has people throwing out all kinds of names. Unfortunately in the end the Vigi kills @Vynce while the Mafia kills Black Jesus. Simple Machine is enforced.

RadicalFuzz:

Any chance of a civilized conversation died with Pimp Willy. The force decided to celebrate with booze, a tradition I was familiar with already, and a few of the guys had a bit too much to drink. A fight about started between SWBeta and DarkGeneral, one of the pointless ones where it's more of a pissing contest than an actual disagreement. SoVi3t went on a big speech about how Alpha was dirty. It was rather poetic really, considering how much beer he'd had. Augustus got up on a table and started ranting about how he was the best cop the city'd ever seen. The usual. I had to leave, this was a damn mockery of the badge.

Back in my office, something was bugging me. Pimp Willy turned up dirty, sure, but something about yesterday doesn't add up. Mafia knows this is a battle for the city, a long one, so it makes sense they would throw Willy under the bus. What I have a problem with is two thirds of those "clean" cops were so blinded that we got nothing outta Pimp. No connection to anyone, no paper trail, zilch. Tomorrow we're back to square one, only with a lotta more dead cops.

I got my lighter out and absentmindedly flicked it. Ocurred to me that this was the point where I admit I have a problem. "Cold turkey" is a strong phrase, but these damn things are gonna kill me someday.

*THUMP*

Hold that thought.

I got up, expecting either a corpse or a crooked cop. I moved to the door. All I could see through the window was the dim glow of the streetlight. I drew my piece and rushed out the door. No hitman, so that was good news. No corpse, which was also good news. And bad news. It ain't what you know about that makes you afraid, it's what you don't know, and right now that sound shouldn't be there. Sure, could be a drunk, but in my line of business coincidences are a luxury I can't afford. I did a quick perimeter around the building and nothing was out of the ordinary. Just fantastic.

Got back to my office door, and a possibility struck me. Lure the guy out and once he gets back to where he was, about to get all cozy, stick him full of lead. I got against the wall and threw open the door with my far hand. Nothing so far, but that didn't mean there wasn't a guy in there ready to give me a nice meeting with Saint Peter. Still, not much I could do at this point but go in.

Rounded the corner, gun held steady. Room was clear, in a sense. Vynce was dead on the floor, two shots in the back of the head. There were two particularly interesting things of note. The pool of blood and the wedding band. Some poor broad was just widowed and she doesn't even know it yet. More importantly, the murder was committed not only in my office, but apparently just a few moments ago. Since Vynce was shot in the back of the head it's safe to say the killer was standing in the doorway, looking in on someone else looking in. Means that whoever offed Vynce likely wasn't dirty, if he was he easily could've stayed for me. Maybe it was an old grudge? Too simple. There were too many questions, best to stay on the move during nights like this. Added bonus of being able to check on some of the less scrupulous suits too.

Moved to get my journal from off my desk. Writing things down turned out to be useful over the years, particularly when you don't know if you're gonna wake up in the morning. As I pulled it up I knocked something over, something I know wasn't there before. Pack of cigs. Took more outta me than I expected, but I had to toss em, could be laced. Damn shame too, they were the nice brand. Looks like our little vigilante has good taste.

Stopped by the station first, seemed the best place to start, if for no other reason than to report Vynce's untimely demise. Spent a lotta long nights here. Well spent time, lotta things don't come to you until you're worked half to death. Chief was always here too, always trying to figure a case out. Maybe it was rubbing off, and I sure hoped it wasn't, but the Mafia's target suddenly became very clear.

I heard a door close gently, too cautiously. Managed to catch a glimpse of the guy coming out of Chief's office, and it definitely wasn't the Chief. Peeked into his office and sure enough The Chief was dead. I cursed under my breath, but there wasn't time to inspect the scene, my lead was getting away. I followed him for a few minutes. Weird thing was he wasn't trying to get out of the station, almost seemed to be going around in a circle. Just as I realized that he stopped. Slid behind a corner just as he turned around. Did he see me, did he hear me, had he been leading me around the place just to see how long I'd follow? Must've been minutes we waited, neither willing to move a muscle. We were both so focused on each other that we were taken by complete surprise with what happened next. We heard footsteps, loud footsteps, the kind that was in a hurry and didn't care who knew. He bolted out the damn door while I was still distracted. To make things worse, his footsteps spooked the new guy and he ran out the way he came.

Since this little excursion went about as well as Chief's retirement I decided to just go back to my office for the night. If nothing else I spooked the hitman so the mafia probably won't be back tonight to tamper with the crime scene any more. I opened the double doors, careful as always of hidden attackers, and slugged back to my office.

Meanwhile Simple Machines was beaten and bruised, bound and gagged, on the floor of the Chief's office. The rookie, antsy, had been asking the Chief a few questions when the hitman came in. He cried himself to sleep and waited for the next day to start.

Actually.... Could you skip me this time around too? Trying to study for my finals tomorrow then I work on Friday and won't be available then. If you can't skip me I can try to get this done as soon as possible, but the truth is I won't end up making an attempt to even sit down and write it until Saturday morning.

Drunk Update :P!

JasonC:

End of Day 4: A Common Thread

Things were getting hot fast, too fast.  With the chief dead, it wouldn't be long until the police force imploded.  They'd end up shooting each other on baseless accusations.  Suppose it'd already started.

I sat in my office with the corpse of Vynce still in the position I found it in.  I wised up this time and decided not to call it in just yet.  Too many things were racing through my head at the moment; I just needed some time to sit and think.  Most of all, I needed a smoke.  Did Vynce carry any stokes on him?  Nope...just a flask carrying some rancid-smelling liquid.  Definitely wasn't whisky.  Nor bourbon.  I flipped the flask over and there was a hand-written label that said "Steel Reserve."  Never heard of it.  Vynce hadn't shaven in days.  Probably was stressed with the ongoing case.  I wondered how his wife was handling it.  Cop wives usually have to deal with a lot of fear and lonely nights.  I took the wedding band figuring it would be a good gesture to return it to Vynce's wife before the medical examiner got his grimy hands on it.  It was then I noticed the inscription on the inside of the band; it read "DarkGeneral."

DarkGeneral was one of the cops at the precinct.  I'm not really sure why his name would be inscribed in Vynce's wedding band, but I wasn't going to keep quiet on this one.  I went back to the station and handed him the ring and told him what happened.  He started to break down in tears.  "NOoooOOooooooooooooooOOOOOoooooOOO" was all he could cry out amidst his wails of despair.

Goddamn, I needed a smoke.  If only my cigs weren't stolen back at ForgeDigger's apartment that night.  It seemed like that was ages ago.  And to think it was only a few nights ago that started all of this...this fruitiness.  Wait.  Fruity.

I whipped out my notepad.  I flipped back to the beginning; always a good place to look when you are in a rut.  I started circling key words that jumped out at me as I was finally realizing a common thread in all this looniness:
 - The Martian and the fruity drapes
 - Missing Person and the fudge-packing
 - The lady with the adam's apple at the funeral
 - Vynce and DarkGeneral as ... really good friends?

Did the Mafia realize something about this police force?  Something that they needed to eradicate?

The police force was trying to console DarkGeneral when suddenly he blurted out, "It was Soviet!  He was always jealous of what Vynce and I had!"  Some gasped in shock.  Before Soviet could respond, all of them drew their revolvers and emptied their guns into their comrade.

Pimp Willy:

Secrets in the Shadows

The rainfall outside my window fell with a rhythm - rat-tat-tat... rat-tat-tat... -- that had me lying beneath the covers with heavy eyelids. On the nightstand was my case file, the various sheets spread across my bed, as I had been trying to figure out what I knew. Something had to be there, just beneath the surface. Like the name of an old friend that you can't quite remember, even though its on the tip of your tongue. It was there, and I knew it, I just couldn't figure it out.

My eyes got heavy, and closed. The cigarette I had left burning on the nightsand went out; watching that doctor get gunned down was too much for my nerves to handle. My dreams came on like a cold shower in the morning, brisk and to the point. The faces of those that had died were begging me to help them. Each time I saw one, I ran to them, but just a bit too slow. Like no matter how fast I ran, how much effort I put into it, they were just getting further away. And when I finally got to them, they were dead. Their screams of pain echoed and haunted me.

Creak.

My eyes shot open, and I had instinctively grabbed my gun.

"Who's there? Show yourself?" I said. And thats when she showed herself. She stepped forward, into the moonlight. The raindrop streaked windows casted shadows across her face, as it moved downwards on the glass it caused her face to take on an eerie appearance. I blinked twice, and rubbed my eyes.

"You're dead." I said. And she simply shook her head.

"No, I'm not..." she said, as she undid the straps on her dress; it fell into a lovely red pile on the floor. Her breasts were amazing in the moonlight, but the bottom half was hidden in the shadows. She moved forward, and crawled onto my bed. I kept the gun pointed at her.

"They know I'm here. But I don't care." She said, crawling closer to me. My hand trembled, and I felt like I needed to pull the trigger, but my hand would not obey.

"Who knows?" I said.

"The ones who are behind it all." She gently pushed the gun aside, and I let her. I let go, and it fell to the floor with a loud clang. "The ones who killed me."

"But you were one of them too" I said, and she just shook her head. I felt her hand run along my leg through the blanket.

"No. I wasn't. That was a setup, a frame; they just dressed him up in a red dress. They knew. They always know." She pulled the blanket down, and pressed against my leg again, this time only the Pajamas between us.

"How did they know?" I asked her. But she didn't speak. She simply took my sidearm into her fingers, and began to play with it. I closed my eyes. I felt my handgun turn into a 12 guage, and she took me into her mouth, the warmth enveloping my weapon. For a moment, I worried what that shadow was hiding; but in the next, the worry was gone. This felt too good to matter.

"How did they know?" I repeated, as she began to clean my gun even faster. I reached down and grabbed the bed sheets, crumpling it in my palm, as my sidearm was serviced. I could feel the buildup coming, the intense pressure, as the round was chambered into the barrel. I tried to warn her, but there was no words I could muster. I let go of the sheets and grabbed her hair to pull her back, but she fought back and tool that cold, hard steel into her mouth. My eyes went wide, and I looked at her just as the hammer clicked. I saw her, with my gun buried deep in her mouth, as the bullet fired.

The muzzle flash lit her mouth up from the inside, and I could see the veins in her cheeks. The bullet quickly exited the back of her head, sending brain matter all over my bedroom. The force of the blow knocked her backwards, and her body went limp, as she fell back onto my bedsheets, the life leaving her eyes.

I lunged forward, holding her in my arms, as she bled out from the gunshot.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." I sobbed.

"How did they know?" she whispered, quietly. I had to lean in closer to hear her, and she repeated it.

"How did they know?"

A loud boom of thunder echoed outside my window, as I gasped and awoke in a cold sweat. I instinctively looked up into the shadows, to see if she was there; but I immediately know she wasn't. I laid back down, breathing a little fast. What an intense dream, I thought.

But those words rang in my ears. How did they know?

I sat up. How did they know? They were always a step ahead.

How did they know?

I sprang from my bed and ran to the phone. It was late, but I knew somebody would be at the precinct. I dialed, as my fingers fumbled for the phone.

"Operator? Get me DarkGeneral" I said. "Make it fast."

The phone went silent. Was I too late?

"DarkGeneral here" the voice on the other end said. "What is it? I'm kind of busy dealing with everything right now..."

"Listen to me" I said. "They know. They have somebody on the inside; one of them is a cop. You're in danger."

The voice on the other end laughed a little bit. "You guys are so cute with your worries, but like I told him I'll tell you too; I'm fine."

"Told who?" I said, worried. "DarkGeneral, who came to you?"

"Here, I'll put him on, he's right here." I gulped. Had I not been fresh from sleep I might have reacted faster, but it was too late.

"Hello, detective" said the voice on the phone. It was cold. "Cute of you to figure it out; but it's too late." I had no response, I just sat there as every limb I had went cold. I heard the bang, and then could hear the phone clatter to the floor. The screams of DarkGeneral echoed from my receiver.

They knew. They always knew.

And I felt lost.

Outside, another flash of lightning lit up my room, and I realized that I was not alone.

myusername22:

I'm following up on a tip I received from one of my sources. I go outside one of the office building I'm told to where I see a shady looking man crossing the street outside a butchers shop. Carefully I decide i should follow him. I follow him past several buildings. Trying to keep my distance, without losing him. As I'm following him he makes numerous twists and turns around the city, to the point where I wonder if he knows where he's going. Eventually, he turns into an alley. If I follow him in there's a good chance he will notice me. If I don't follow him my only lead will get away. I can't run the risk. I enter the alleyway.

I enter the alleyway and look around. Nobody is here. maybe he entered one of the side doors or maybe he climbed one of the fire exits? If i hadn't stopped to think maybe I wouldn't have lost him. I feel entirely disappointed. I can't let this lead slip away so I further enter the alleyway past the dumpster looking around for any signs of which way he could have gone. NOTHING. It's clear that nobody is here. It's been a very long week. This is easily the biggest disappointment of the week. I decide to tturn around and head home.

A force pushes me back against the wall and I feel a hand grab my throat. It isn't long before my eyes see the owner of the hand standing right before me.

"What are you after?" he asks me.

I think for a moment. I'm panicking inside, this could easily be my last moment. I need to respond with something that won't get me killed and say it before he gets suspicious.

"I hear your looking for a new gun shipment and I wanted to personally make you an offer." The words slip out of my mouth before I think of them.

I'd known their last supplier was killed by the competition, so it made sense they'd be looking for a new gun runner right now.

"We might have an offer for you. What's the quality?" The strange man replies.

I reply, "Best in the business."

The man takes his hand off my throat and puts his arm on my shoulder. Together we start walking down the alleyway until we go into one of the side doors. As we enter I see people have shown up multiple times in my investigation. Suspects I haven't been able to find, names I couldn't track down. I've found the mafia. We enter the next room where there's an old man sitting down. The old man looks up interested before the man from the alleyway says,

"I've found us a new gun runner."
"Is that so?" The old man asks.
"and what quality guns will you offer us?" He asks me.

"Best this city has to offer" I quickly respond.
"Unfortunately my current gun seems to be damaged. Would you care to take a look?" He asks me this.
"I'll have it fixed in no time!" I respond quickly again, I'm a bit worried maybe I'm taking things a bit too fast.
The old man takes out his gun. I'm expecting him to hand it to me, but instead he points it at me. I try to reach for my own gun In time. I'm too late, just as my hand reaches my gun I see him pull the trigger.

That was the last thing I saw before i woke up frightened. It's been a very long week, too long. The late afternoon sun is shining through my window. Have I been asleep all day?  I can hear the loud group of a large number of people outside. It sounds like a mob ready to lynch. I open the window to hear a ton of bickering on the street outside. "we should lynch him!" "he's one of the mafioso!" the people are screaming back and forth but it seems they are arguing about one person, Orchizoolander. He argues with them for a while, eventually he claims to be the vigilante who's been trying to kill off all the mafia. I must have been watching them argue for over an hour because the light had shifted significantly by the time one of them eventually pulls out a gun.
"Any last words?" said the one with the gun.
A few moments of silence pass.
"Alright then"

I look back to Orchizoolander and notice something. WTF-AKUMA-HAX Is running up. WTF-AKUMA-HAX Jumps into the air pushing Orchizoolander out of the way just as I see the flash of the gun go off and hear a really loud bang.Orchizoolander is saved, but at the cost of WTF-AKUMA-HAX life.

Forgedigger:

Quote
The image of WTF-AKUMA_HAX's sacrifice still fresh in my mind, I rushed to get dressed; I couldn't let another lead slip away. Not after what happened with Pimp Willy.

After dressing myself, I bolted outside to search for the notorious Orochizoolander, scribbling a profile in my notepad to make sure I had every piece of relevant info possible. He was known around as a man with nerve, a guy with all bark and no bite who spoke his mind. He was the type to confuse those around him. He left an impression as he passed. Not exactly a good one, but people sure could point him out if they'd met him, especially because of his being hopped-up most of the time. Claims to be taking justice into his own hands. Maybe he killed Vynce? The image made me shudder all over again.

Whoever this guy was, I couldn't let him get away.

I asked around the local street corners. Most of the street-dwellers were reluctant to talk to a cop, but the info I could scrape up suggested he was out on a date with some bird at Tommy's on 23rd. Nice place for a man with his rep, seemed odd. Especially when his ass was on the line only a few hours ago. Something was fishy here. Maybe this was the jackpot I was looking for. I hailed a cab and headed off to Tommy's.

The place was surprisingly packed. Real easy for someone to blend in. Unfortunately for him though, Orochizoolander stood out like a sore thumb. He was sitting at a corner booth with none other than the lovely Co-co Jones. Strange - quite frankly she was out of his league. Yet she seemed to be enjoying herself. Decided to stake out the couple to see if this rabbit-hole lead anywhere. Sat down at the bar and ordered a shot of whiskey.

I scanned the place for anything else suspicious. Plenty of shady-looking guys sitting at the bar themselves. That wasn't very important, but worth noting.

Finally, the couple rose to leave. I paid for the drink and tailed them.

They stopped at a cheap motel and bought a room - number 169. I sighed inwardly; this wasn't the type of police-work I pride myself of. It was possible his dodging of a bullet today. But Co-co Jones? It didn't make sense. There had to be something going on here.

Swallowing my pride, I followed them up quietly up the stairs. She apparently couldn't keep her hands off him. After slamming out of room 169, I listened with my ear against the door. From her moaning, I could tell that there was some serious necking going on in there. Then there was a pause. Orochizoolander whispered something softly that I couldn't hear. Then louder, he whispered:

"Life's been pretty good for you lately, Co-co, hasn't it?"

That seemed like an odd thing to say given the circumstances. But the kissing continued. Just what the hell was going on in there? I peered through the lock to get a look at what was going down. Then I saw the gun he had pointed at the lady on her knees. I reached for the doorknob - no use, it was locked.

"It's a shame, really." The motel erupted into an echoing gunshot.

I slammed my shoulder against the door, but it wouldn't open. Again. Nothing. I looked through the lock again. Orochizoolander was headed out the fire escape. I bolted down to meet him outside, unholstering my gun.

I turned the corner, drawing my gun to catch him. What I saw instead forced up my lunch.

There on the ground, was the splattered remains of Orochizoolander. Someone must've pushed him off, then made sure to spill his brains, it seemed.

I sighed. So much for a productive night.

[/b]The Vigilante[/b] killed The Co-Jones. He was a roleless civilian.

[/b]The Mafia[/b] killed Orochizoolander. He was the Vigilante.

And finally, we come to @Missing Person.

Desperate and exhausted,  the Civs decide between lynching SWBeta or AlphaCommando.  In the end they lynch Alpha, who takes Icege with him. Mafia kills SimpleMachine at night to win the game.
