Title: Play-by-post Roleplaying Pathfinder
Post by: jasonC on February 28, 2018, 06:48:39 pm
Anybody interested in a play-by-post roleplaying game? Let your inner dweebo out. I would be the Game Master (GM) and it would be Pathfinder based. I would help you with all the rules if you are not familiar. I have no idea what the theme would be, but it would be completely original and am open to suggestions. Really, I'm just gauging interest now, if any.

----

Ok it looks like there is some interest so we'll try it out. I can help you with the rules and everything; the only hard rule is to have fun.

To join AT ANY TIME:
Please roll 4d6 six times to get your ability scores. Do it like this: "<roll>4d6</roll>" using square brackets [] instead of the <> or by using the Dice Roll button just above votebot. That will give you one score.

Ok. First let's talk theme. I'm inclined to go classic fantasy with wizards and shit, but i'm open to anything. Cowboys, robots, or anything really. What do you guys think? After we land the theme, I'll help you guys with making characters.

Title: Re: Play-by-post Roleplaying Pathfinder

What's EOW?

End of the World
Title: Re: Play-by-post Roleplaying Pathfinder
Post by: jasonC on March 05, 2018, 03:02:51 pm
So votebot and kappa threw me off. Are you serious about JTM vs EOW? We could do it; it might be challenging but i'm up for it. Otherwise we could start with the run-of-the-mill dragons and caves but leave it open ended where I could bring in JTM vs EOW as a campaign lol.

Anyway, to start, each of you roll 4d6 to get your base ability scores. Do it like this "<roll>4d6</roll>" using square brackets [] instead of the <> or the Dice Roll button just above votebot. Once you see your scores, we'll go from there.

I'll update the OP with instructions for ppl who may want to join in as we go along.

Ok, I'm going to try to keep the numbers out of the game as much because it can be cumbersome, but we just need to get through some initial stuff on character creation. So MP, your Ability Scores are:

12, 18, 18, 11, 10, 13

The higher the Score, the better. What you need to do now is think about what kind of character you'd want to play and assign the Scores to your Abilities. The six Abilities are:

Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha

If you've played any type of RPG, you should have an idea of what these are. Basically if you want to be a warrior type, you'd put the 18's on Str and Con. If you want a wizard type, you'd put 18 on Int. Ask if you want more details on each Ability, if you really care.

To help you *maybe* prepare for what may come; here's a tidbit on where we will start:

You will begin in a village with a population of a few hundred people of various races and classes. Most are regular town folk with the next majority being warriors numbering in a few dozen. The village appears to be your run-of-the-mill city state with some nobility in charge. Generally, there is order, peace, and happiness.

TLDR - MP, fill in these stats with your scores of 12, 18, 18, 11, 10, 13:

Str:
Dex:
Con:
Int:
Wis:
Cha:

Cha

Int
Str
Con

With each dice roll for Ability Scores, the lowest number gets dropped aka best 3 out of 4.

Ok so now you've got to pick a race out of Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half Elf, Halfling, Half Orc, or Human. There are some major differences, ask if you really want to know, but here's a pic of what each may look like:

Do any of the races give extra Cha?

Yes, the Gnome and Halfling give +2 Cha. Also, the Half Elf, Half Orc, and Human allow you to give +2 to your choice of Ability so you could choose those and get extra Cha as well.

MP - please choose which Ability you'd like to give +2 to.

And then, please choose a class such as Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, or Wizard. There are other available classes and archetypes if none of these tickle your fancy.

Wow that was weird.

Ok Syn, assign your scores of 10, 5, 15, 16, 8, and 14 into the stats of Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, and Cha. For bards, Charisma is useful.

Others can drop in at any time and we can ravel them in.

Ok, so here is where we really get customized with your characters. In a role playing game like this, you can do anything, but to determine how successful you are at doing it, you have to have skills. You each have a number of Skill Ranks to allocate.

Alpha - 11 Skill Ranks
MP - 5 Skill Ranks
Syn - 6 Skill Ranks

Please assign one Skill Rank into the following choices:

Acrobatics
Appraise
Bluff
Climb
Craft
Diplomacy
Disable Device
Disguise
Escape Artist
Fly
Handle Animal
Heal
Intimidate
Knowledge (arcana)
Knowledge (dungeoneering)
Knowledge (engineering)
Knowledge (geography)
Knowledge (history)
Knowledge (local)
Knowledge (nature)
Knowledge (nobility)
Knowledge (planes)
Knowledge (religion)
Linguistics
Perception
Perform
Profession
Ride
Sense Motive
Sleight of Hand
Spellcraft
Stealth
Survival
Swim
Use Magic Device

You can ask specifics about Skills, if you are curious.

Ok, you have some options here:

1) Courtier's Outfit with Jewelry, leaving you with 40 gp for other items
2) Courtier's Outfit without Jewelry, leaving you with 90 gp for other items and looking like an out-of-place commoner
3) Noble's Outfit, leaving you with 45 gp for other items, but still not fully accessorized without a signet ring and jewelry

Ok game thread is up:

http://jesustoastmafia.com/index.php/topic,1313.0.html (http://jesustoastmafia.com/index.php/topic,1313.0.html)

Some general rules for play-by-post roleplaying:
- keep in character, the thread should read like a narrative. The shit talking and strategizing can stay in this sign-up thread.
- write in third person
- any actions that you take which has an unknown outcome, leave that up to me to resolve. here are some examples:
Ok: "Wizard sits down, puts his feet on the table, spits on floor, and throws his hat onto the bar"
Bad: "Wizard sits down, casts STEAL BOTTLE, walks out with 100-yr old rum stashed in robes"
So in this Bad example, it was ok up until the walking out part. Every spell has a chance of failure.

So if you fail at crafting, it just means that it takes longer to craft it. You will automatically roll again to craft it the next day. Each craft takes some of your wealth depending on the value of the item you're trying to craft (usually 1/3 of the raw material). The value of jewelry can vary, so for this piece that Sammich is trying craft I assumed a value of 3 gp, which would cost you 1 gp.

Favored Class Bonus - you all get to pick one more bonus to further make your character unique. Every time you level up, you'll get to pick one of these again. So if you see a fraction, it means you would need to take this bonus multiple times over multiple levels to get it.

Alpha, please select from:
- one extra HP
- one extra Skill Rank
- gain 1/6 of a new Rogue talent

Missing Person, please select from:
- one extra HP
- one extra Skill Rank
- when casting wizard enchantment spells, add +1/3 to the effective caster level of the spell, but only to determine the spell's duration

Synonym, please select from:
- one extra HP
- one extra Skill Rank
- add +1 to the gnome's total number of bardic performance rounds per day

Fruit Punch Samurai G, please select from:
- one extra HP
- one extra Skill Rank
- add +2 on rolls to stabilize when dying

Ok you guys are very close to completing your characters. One of the final things to do is to pick traits. This helps you add a little more flavor to your personality/background and may also give you some bonuses in certain situations. You each get to select up to 2 traits (or select only one, or none if you don't want to) from the following:

Adopted
Anatomist
Armor Expert
Birthmark
Bullied
Bully
Canter
Caretaker
Charming
Child of Nature
Child of the Streets
Child of the Temple
Classically Schooled
Courageous
Dangerously Curious
Deft Dodger
Desert Child (Desert)
Devotee of the Green
Dirty Fighter
Divine Warrior
Ear for Music
Ease of Faith
Eyes and Ears of the City

Magical Knack
Magical Lineage
Magical Talent
Magic is Life
Mathematical Prodigy
Militia Veteran (Any Town or Village)
Natural-Born Leader
Patient Optimist
Poverty-Stricken
Reactionary
Resilient
Rich Parents
River Rat (Marsh or River)
Sacred Conduit
Sacred Touch
Savanna Child (Plains)
Scholar of Ruins (Human only)
Scholar of the Great Beyond

Charming
Rich Parents

Hmm you can't pick both of these because these are both Social Traits and you can't pick two from the same type. I guess I should have separated out the different Traits by type. Generally, there are Comabt, Magic, Faith, and Social Traits. There are also Religious, Regional, and Racial Traits but I lumped everything together in that list to make it less complex. Anyhow, here are the details of the two Traits you selected.

Charming - get bonus to Bluff and Diplomacy skills (and spells) vs characters that may be attracted to you
Rich Parents - start with 900 gp wealth

So please pick one between the two if you still want them, and please choose another from the list.

Adopted
Wisdom in the Flesh

So Adopted will mean that you were adopted and raised by someone not of your own actual race, and raised in a society not your own. Which race would you like your adoptive race to be?

Also, Wisdom in the Flesh will do nothing for you because it's uses your Wisdom score for things instead of Strength or Dex, but all of your scores for those abilities are generally the same. Pick another one instead.

Half-Orc

Charming
Bully

Damn, Bully is also a Social Trait.

Bully - You grew up in an environment where the meek were ignored and you often had to resort to threats or violence to be heard. You get a bonus to your Intimidate Skill.

So.......pick again.

Fuck, I'm just gonna list a bunch that I want. Just pick the first one in the list that isn't a Social one.

Fast Talker
Natural-Born Leader
Starchild
Wisdom in the Flesh
Classically Schooled
Eyes and Ears of the City
Divine Warrior
Focused Mind

Fast-Talker

Half-Orc

Hmm, you're running into the same problem as Alpha. Both Fast-Talker and Adopted are Social Traits, so you can't have both of them. Here are the specific details for those traits.

Fast-Talker: You had a knack at getting yourself into trouble as a child, and as a result developed a silver tongue at an early age. You get a bonus to your Bluff skill.

Choosing Half-Orc as an adoptive race allows you to choose either Brute (You have worked for a crime lord, either as a lowlevel enforcer or as a guard, and are adept at frightening away people) or Outcast (Driven from town after town because of your heritage, you have become adept at living apart from others. You get a bonus to your Survival skill).

Dancing Lights: creates torches or other lights
Ghost Sound: Figment sounds

A figment spell creates a false sensation. Those who perceive the figment perceive the same thing, not their own slightly different versions of the figment. It is not a personalized mental impression. Figments cannot make something seem to be something else. A figment that includes audible effects cannot duplicate intelligible speech unless the spell description specifically says it can. If intelligible speech is possible, it must be in a language you can speak. If you try to duplicate a language you cannot speak, the figment produces gibberish. Likewise you cannot make a visual copy of something unless you know what it looks like (or copy another sense exactly unless you have experienced it).

Because figments and glamers are unreal, they cannot produce real effects the way that other types of illusions can. Figments and glamers cannot cause damage to objects or creatures, support weight, provide nutrition, or provide protection from the elements. Consequently, these spells are useful for confounding foes, but useless for attacking them directly.

You mean Light?

Light: Object shines like a torch.

So Dancing Lights would create torches or other lights. Light would make an object begin to illuminate like a torch.

Dancing Lights - Range is 100ft, meaning you can make torches or will-o-wisp-like things (or even a vaguely humanoid shape) far away and they last for 1 minute
Dancing Lantern - Range is touch, meaning you will make a lantern within 5 ft of yourself, but it follows you as move, and it lasts for 1 hour+

MP - you also get to choose an Arcane School from the following:

Abjuration
Conjuration
Divination
Enchantment
Evocation
Illusion
Necromancy
Sin Magic Specialist
Transmutation

Or choose none and be a Universalist.

MP - you've chosen Transmutation as your Arcane School. Now choose two opposing schools - spells from these two schools will be harder for you to cast.

Charming Blessed with good looks, you've come to depend on the fact that others find you attractive. You gain a +1 trait bonus when you use Bluff or Diplomacy on a character that is (or could be) sexually attracted to you, and a +1 trait bonus to the save DC of any language-dependent spell you cast on such characters or creatures.

Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.

Sneak Attack (Ex) If you can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from your attack, you can strike a vital spot for extra damage. Your attack deals 1d6 points of extra damage anytime your target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC, or when you flank your target. Should you score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage, you can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. You cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual -4 penalty. Jason's said this is a drop-in game, so it's never too late to make a character. You'd be joining 4 people that have no D&D experience (well I assume the other three have none).

I made a character card for Manx's game in 2013...

...then proceeded not to play. So it's possible that I have -1 in experience.

It's fairly slow-paced as well. Really, the main objective is to fill in dead air/space in between actual games. But I have no intention on quitting. I do have some surprises in store for the party. If you guys want to switch up the pace and go faster (just in case you are furiously refreshing the page), well fuck you.

TROPICAL PUNCH
Male Half-Orc fighter 1
None medium humanoid (orc, human)
Init +2; Senses Darkvision (60 ft.), Perception -2,
Languages Common, Orc

AC 12, touch 12, flat-footed 10
hp 10 (1HD)
Fort +2, Ref +4, Will -2, +2 trait bonus on all saving throws against illusions.

Speed 30 ft. (6 squares)
Face 5 ft. Reach 5 ft.
Base Atk +1; CMB +4; CMD 16

Abilities Str 16, Dex 14, Con 11, Int 10, Wis 6, Cha 8
Special Qualities Bonus Feats, Bonus Stabilization, Darkvision, Intimidating, Orc Blood, Orc Ferocity, Weapon Familiarity,
Feats Lightning Reflexes, Throw Anything
Skills Acrobatics +3, Bluff -1, Climb +3, Diplomacy -1, Disguise -1, Escape Artist +2, Fly +2, Heal -2, Intimidate +1, Perception -2, Perform (Untrained) -1, Ride +2, Sense Motive -2, Sleight of Hand +3, Stealth +2, Survival -2, Swim +3,
Possessions

Bonus Feats At 1st level, and at every even level thereafter, a fighter gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement (meaning that the fighter gains a feat at every level). These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as combat feats, sometimes also called "fighter bonus feats." Upon reaching 4th level, and every four levels thereafter (8th, 12th, and so on), a fighter can choose to learn a new bonus feat in place of a bonus feat he has already learned. In effect, the fighter loses the bonus feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat, prestige class, or other ability. A fighter can only change one feat at any given level and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time he gains a new bonus feat for the level.

Bonus Stabilization Add +2 on rolls to stabilize when dying.

Darkvision (Ex) Range 60 ft.; Darkvision is the extraordinary ability to see with no light source at all, out to a range specified for the creature. Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise-invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally. The presence of light does not spoil darkvision.

Dirty Fighter You wouldn't have lived to make it out of childhood without the aid of a sibling, friend, or companion on whom you could always count to distract your enemies long enough to do a little bit more damage than normal. When you hit a foe you are flanking, you deal an additional 1 point of damage (this damage is added to your base damage, and is multiplied on a critical hit). This additional damage is a trait bonus.

Intimidating (Ex) Half-orc receive a +2 racial bonus on Intimidate skill checks due to their fearsome nature.

Orc Blood (Ex) Half-orc count as both humans and orcs for any effect related to race.

Orc Ferocity (Ex) 1/day, when a half-orc is brought below 0 hit points, but not killed, he can fight on for one more round as if disabled. At the end of his next turn, unless brought to above 0 hit points, he immediately falls unconscious and begins dying.

Skeptic Growing up, you were always around magical effects to the extent that you realized that much of it was smoke and mirrors. You gain a +2 trait bonus on all saving throws against illusions.

Weapon Familiarity (Ex) Half-orcs are proficient with greataxes and falchions, and treat any weapon with the word "orc" in its name as a martial weapon.
